Anyone who’s ever stepped foot onto the polo grounds in the Coachella Valley knows that festival beauty is a polarizing topic. For some people, one weekend of music and greasy food also doubles as an excuse to go all out with their hair and makeup. However, when you’re Lupita Nyong’o, you can wear your festival-appropriate looks anywhere and everywhere… and that’s just what she did at the Accessories Council ACE Awards last night.

Nick Barose, her longtime makeup artist, was inspired by his client’s Carolina Herrera yellow dress. “I wanted the makeup to be fun, quirky and colorful,” he says. “Our friend, and her stylist, Micaela Erlanger was getting an award, so it was the perfect moment for her eyes to be accessories.”

Nyong’o’s experly-applied, cabochon-cut Swarovski crystals might be a little risky to wear at Panorama, but with Barose’s tips ahead, you’ll get the same long-lasting results with whatever you have on hand.

“I try to wipe the spot with cotton swabs dipped in cleansing water first, this way, the gems can stick with eyelash glue,” Barose instructs. “Be sure whatever you use underneath is not greasy, so that it sticks all night — and it should if you glue it well!”

As for his preferred adhesive? Ardell Clear LashGrip Eyelash Adhesive. “I apply it to skin with a toothpick so each spots are carefully selected. Then, with a tweezer, I applied the stones and press them in with my finger. It stays really well,” he notes.

If you’re wondering how Barose can be so sure, it’s because he actually wore looks like these back in his “New York City club kid days,” he tells us. He tried the look out on himself the morning before the awards, playing with placements and working out the shapes and colors so he knew they would stay in place — which Nyong’o confirmed the next day.

In the event that a gemstone does fall off, Barose says not to trip. “Just pull them off and start over again. This kind of makeup is fun and not too serious,” he advises. “Don’t overthink it. Just have fun. After all, you’re pasting rhinestones on your face!”

The crystals complemented Nyongo’s black liner (Lancôme Drama-Liqui Pencil in Noir Intense), matte black shadow (Lancôme Color Design in Arabian Nights), and a tiny bit of orange pigment (Baja from Urban Decay’s Born to Run palette). Barose only wanted a flash of color so that it wouldn’t compete with the gems, he says.

Ariana Grande complemented her perfect winged liner with under-eye gems that nearly rival her engagement ring from Pete Davidson. Operative word being “nearly.”
