President Kiir’s remarks come in the wake of sporadic clashes between remaining forces of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in Sudan and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) at the two neighbouring countries’ borders.

The Khartoum government has launched a petition with the United Nations over South Sudan’s involvement in the latest clash between SAF and SPLA in the Blue Nile town of Kurmuk.

“I want to say here that all these accusations being leveled by the Republic of Sudan  against us are nothing other than smoke screens to mask Khartoum’s own activities in support of the armed dissident groups that are fighting its proxy war against the Republic of South Sudan. We categorically reject these claims as utterly baseless and malicious”, Kiir told the press at the presidential palace in Juba.

He at the same time called upon the international community to be vigilant on the actions of the Khartoum government, saying it is threatening co-existence between the two countries.

“This attitude of Khartoum represents potential threat to international peace and security in the region. We call upon the international community and the United Nations in particular to urge Khartoum to desist from the hostile activities intended to destabilize the Republic of South Sudan”, said Kiir.

He added that the Republic of South Sudan is committed to maintain peace between the two recently separated nations, but said that the country would protect its sovereignty in case of any external aggression.

“We are committed to peaceful resolutions to any conflict but we will never allow our sovereignty to be violated by anybody”, Kiir said.
