Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation according to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime.
Over 1,200 people helped to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern-day slavery by walking or running five kilometres this Saturday morning. The “STEPS in the Park” event at the Gardens by the Bay was conceived by EmancipAsia, a Singapore-based not-for-profit organization.The aim of the organization is to help people to “take their first step” towards gaining a better understanding of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Experiential learning activities and posters showed participants the different dimensions of the subject, including Singapore’s National Plan of Action against Trafficking in Persons.
Also present was Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, who said people must be more aware of the issue and ask pertinent questions to tackle human trafficking. For example, when people buy things in Singapore or overseas, they may question if the goods and services they consume are the “products of forced labour and slavery by people who are trafficked.”
