The Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been stripped of the title of Datuk Seri by the Sultan of Selangor, a move that was made effective from the 3rd of November. “The decision was caused by Anwar’s repeated questioning of the integrity of the Selangor Sultan and royal institution in resolving the Selangor Mentri Besar crisis, as well as his questioning of issues related to Islam,” said the Sultan’s private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani in a statement issued this Thursday.

The statement was written by the Sultan’s private secretary, Mohamad Munir Bani, who added that Mr Anwar was no longer fit to hold the title. The leader of the Malaysian Opposition had held this title for the last 22 years. The title was given to him in 1992 by Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz, who was then the Sultan of Selangor according to Information provided by Channel News Asia.

On the other hand Selangor Mentri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali was silent on the matter and did not comment. When surrounded by reporters and questioned about the matter, all he said was “I have no comment, no comment.”
