More than 1,000 mourners gathered in a church in Sydney to pay last respects and bid farewell to the ex-deputy prime minister of Australia Lionel Bowen on Wednesday. The funeral was arranged by the state and was attended by several political and other influential figures of the country.
The late politician had served as the deputy to the Prime Minister Bob Hawke during 1983 to 1990 after which he retired from politics. Mr. Bowne expired on 1st April at the age of 89 and was a widely liked politician, as mentioned by the former Prime Minister Bob Hawke. He delivered eulogy at the funeral of his deceased colleague.
He said, “I found and came immensely to admire a man of total commitment, integrity and courage, no doubt in part because of his own modest origins, which he never forgot. Lionel was relentless in championing the needs of the working men and women of this nation.”
Referring to the family of Bowen, he said, “To you Claire and to the family, we offer our sincere condolences and we thank you for sharing this warm, wise, decent, generous, humble, this unique man with us. Lionel, thanks for the memories.”
