In an unusual press conference hosted by Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, he aimed at soothing the increasingly vibrant public sentiments over the incident of an officer shooting dead a knife-wielding teenager on an empty streetcar. Chief Blair mentioned in an assured tone that answers will be provided to questions that have risen into the shooting as he is making this task his “highest priority.” The unexpected and highly unusual step of hosting a press conference was taken on Monday after a video of the incident dispersed exponentially on the internet, attracting increased police scrutiny.

Blair mentioned in the press conference that “I am aware of the very serious concerns that the public has. I know that people are seeking answers as to what occurred, why it happened and if anything could have been done to prevent the tragic death of this young man.” He elucidated that “I am also seeking the answers to these important questions. I want to assure all of the citizens of Toronto of our unwavering commitment to get the answers they seek.”

Additionally, Chief Blair confidently promised that Toronto Police Service will “co-operate fully” with the SIU’s investigation. Apart from that, he announced to launch another separate investigation into the incident, as he is obligated by law to find out if his force’s policies, procedures and training were followed. He stated that “addressing the concerns of the public and the deceased young man’s family is our highest priority,” adding that “we will act as quickly as circumstances and the law allow.”
