The Obama administration made a surprise announcement on Friday to unexpectedly extend the review period on the Keystone XL pipeline, possibly delaying a final decision on the controversial project until after the Nov. 4 congressional elections. The announcement made by The State Department has added 3 months period to an environmental review period, in part to assess how a pending lawsuit in Nebraska might affect the pipeline route.

In the announcement, State Department mentioned that “the Permit process will conclude once factors that have a significant impact on determining the national interest of the proposed project have been evaluated and appropriately reflected in the decision documents.” Moreover, it was added that “The Department will give the agencies sufficient time to submit their views.” On the other hand, the Republicans have always supported the pipeline and so denounced the decision on Friday. Focusing the blame on President Obama, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell alleged that “here’s the single greatest shovel-ready project in America — one that could create thousands of jobs right away — but the President simply isn’t interested.” It was added that “apparently radical activists carry more weight than Americans desperate to get back on the job.”

Almost a clear majority of environmentalists in the country support the administration in opposing the Keystone pipeline, as many say it would cause ecological damage along its route from the tar sands of Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. While the State Department is reviewing the proposal, President Obama has said he will make the final decision on the pipeline.
