A press release issued by CFB Cold Lake management has confirmed on Wednesday evening that its back gates will remain closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, along with several other security measures put in place “in light of recent events in St. Jean and Ottawa.” It was explained that “the 4 wing military police flight has taken steps to ensure that the Wing’s level of security remains appropriate to situation.”
Moreover, military police is also planning to conduct random vehicle searches and identification checks on people traveling through 4 Wing. The statement elucidated that “we are taking steps…to ensure the proper security protocols are being used to protect military members and their families.” Meanwhile, the Minister of National Defence, Rob Nicholson, offered condolences to the family of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was shot and killed while standing guard at the National War Memorial. Nicholson stated that “we continue to consult with our governmental partners to adapt our force protection measures to the evolving situation in order to protect our men and women in the Defence team,” adding that “our deployments in support of the security forces in Iraq will continue unimpeded.”
Whereas on the other hand, Chief of Defence Staff, General Tom Lawson, also mentioned that “we will continue to…assess the current security environment and are evaluating the need for additional security measures at Canadian Armed Forces installations.” He alleged that “we remain undeterred in our mission to protect Canada and Canadians,” adding that “we will carry on all our missions at home and abroad in a steadfast, resolute and vigilant manner.”
