Police have announced to have arrested a 21-year-old man, James Clifford Paul, and charged with aggravated sexual assault for an alleged assault on a young girl from the Paul First Nation. Paul is believed to have no fixed address. According to the police, charges against Paul extend from attempted murder charge to charges of aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping.

According to the authorities, police and emergency crews were alerted for help at the Alexis First Nation at around 4:30 on Saturday afternoon, when a family member found the young girl lying on the ground and fighting for her life. Thereafter, the girl was airlifted to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance. According to a STARS spokesperson, the young girl sustained “injuries related to blunt trauma.” Later, the RCMP confirmed that the suspect is well known to them and to the girl, whereas they are working on finding the relationship to her family.

Officer-in-Charge of the RCMP Serious Crimes Unit, Superintendent Gary Steinke, mentioned in his remarks that “this arrest came about so quickly because local citizens picked up the phone and called investigators with the information they needed to take this dangerous criminal off the streets.” It was added that “our focus now is on helping the victim’s family and community deal with the impact of this horrendous attack.” Furthermore, it was revealed that Paul currently remains in police custody but will appear in Stony Plain Provincial Court on January 7, 2015.
