The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Director Thomas Frieden, mentioned on Monday that despite the progress in fighting Ebola in Liberia, the swelling number of cases and diminishing number of treatment beds in neighboring Sierra Leone and Guinea inflict “sobering” challenges to stopping the epidemic in West Africa.

According to CDC Director Thomas Frieden, his most recent trip to the world’s three hardest hit countries showed him “a world of difference” in comparison to his previous visit in late August and September. At the time, Frieden claims to remember that cases were increasing exponentially in Liberia and dead bodies lay in streets and in treatment centers. Returning to the United States on Sunday, Frieden stated that “there is real momentum and real progress” in the region, adding that “I’m hopeful about stopping the epidemic, but I remain realistic that this is going to be a long, hard fight.” However, Frieden failed to predict time needed for health officials to snuff out the epidemic and bring the caseload to zero. He said “the quicker we scale up, the quicker it will be over.”

Frieden alleged that a global response to “double down” is needed along with not letting complacency to set in, which he said is already happening. He highlighted that some health-care workers are becoming less vigilant in Guinea and not even wearing protective equipment. He alleged to have seen a nurse starting an intravenous line in a patient from Sierra Leone without putting on gloves.
