Bramalea Celtic Football Club has confirmed that its former president, Jack Sweeney, and two of his family members were among the six victims killed in a garbage truck accident, when it crashed into a group of pedestrians, in downtown Glasgow on Monday.

According to a Facebook message post published by the club on Monday evening, its ex-president was among those fatally struck by the vehicle as it careened through George Square. In addition to that, Sweeney’s wife, Lorraine, and their granddaughter, Erin, were also killed. It was mentioned that “it is with great shock and sadness we share with you our friend and past President Jack Sweeney, his wife Lorraine and granddaughter Erin were victims of (Monday’s) tragedy in Glasgow. Our thoughts and prayers go to the Family and friends of the Sweeney family (sic).” Club member, Robert Milligan, remembered Sweeney on Tuesday and revealed that he used to live in Canada until a few years ago.

Sweeney’s friend, Thomas Donnelly, alleged that he served as president of the Brampton club from 1996 to 1998. He explained that Sweeney lived in Canada for approximately five years and moved back to his native Scotland in 1999. Donnelly alleged that “he was just a really nice guy, became president of the club because he was so well liked.” Police has confirmed that at least seven other people were also seriously injured in the crashes the truck driver was also transported to a nearby hospital.
