NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair visited a factory in Chatham, Ontario, on Tuesday and highlighted Canada’s negotiations on a trade deal with Pacific Rim countries that would help manufacturers prosper in new foreign markets. Visiting a dairy farm near Stratford, Ont., the next day, Mulcair declared he would never expose farmers to foreign markets and would, in fact, defend the system of supply management which artificially enriches Canada’s dairy, poultry and egg producers at the expense of consumers.

Explaining the issue at hand, Mulcair alleged that Pacific Rim countries are not allowing our manufacturers to sell into their markets unless their farmers can sell into the Canadian market. However, he stressed that the NDP adamantly refuses to even talk about opening up supply-managed sectors in dairy and poultry. He pointed out that “we’ve got to stop feeling badly about the system we’ve put in place to protect farming families in this country and defend our system,” adding that “it doesn’t mean we don’t fight to get better trade around the world. We’ll fight to get a good trade deal with Pacific partners but we’ll also make sure we champion and defend what served Canadians so well.”

Mulcair is visiting different parts of the province including region of cornfields on the outskirts of small and medium-sized cities like Chatham or Cambridge, Brantford, Sarnia, and London over a week-long campaign. A small handful of ridings are NDP, one is Liberal but the vast majority is Tory blue.
