In her recent remarks, the new Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Rona Ambrose, mentioned that she is incredibly disappointed by the American government’s rejection of a major pipeline project last week. According to Ambrose, Canada’s energy sector was depending on the project and now its rejection will result in job losses in Alberta.
Speaking about the scrapping of the Keystone XL pipeline project, Ambrose stressed that it was unfortunately debated only politically without the pure scientific and impartial assessment of the project. She mentioned that “the overall storyline here, which is really troubling for the energy sector, is this idea of politics being injected into the approval process of a major, multi-billion dollar infrastructure access-to-market pipeline project,” adding that “and that is a major problem for the industry.”
Ambrose rose to the position of the interim leader of Conservative caucus last Thursday in result of a ranked ballot. Discussing her new role as interim leader, she seemed hopeful to be able to give a more conciliatory and constructive vibe in the House of Commons as her caucus works to hold the new Liberal government to account. She alleged that “I feel that we can be strong without being nasty, and I think that we can be very substantive. And I do not support pettiness in politics,” adding that “so I hope that I will bring a new tone and I hope that my caucus appreciates that. I think Canadians will appreciate that.”
