Weather conditions are gearing up in U.K. as blizzard brings icy blast to swathes of northern Britain, prompting abrupt road closures as authorities brace for rush hour chaos. The wet weather coming in from the Atlantic Ocean has already brought rain to many parts of the country and snow to Scotland and the higher areas of northern England with more expected to follow.

Many fear that the residual rainwater, freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall will combine to create hellish conditions for Monday’s rush hour. According to Met Office forecaster, Chris Page, “a lot of surfaces are likely to be covered in water from the rainfall, temperatures will then drop-out as cloud begins to clear and with the temperatures the way they are on the wet surfaces there’s a chance that icy patches will develop on untreated surfaces. The public need to be aware of that, especially motorists.” He mentioned that “if there are icy patches that could lead to some dangerous driving conditions. There could be a knock on effect in the rush hour so it’s important the public are aware.” It was added that “scattered snow showers will continue throughout the rush hour period. We’ll also have some very strong winds with gusts of up to 60 mph on the exposed sites, mainly on higher ground but also on the coats – mainly in the west.”

Meanwhile, motorists are already facing difficulties in the white-out conditions on higher routes near the Lake District. Cumbria Police’s road traffic updated in a tweet that ”Kirkstone Pass and The Struggle CLOSED. Several vehicles stranded & RTCs (road traffic collisions). Treacherous conditions. Please DO NOT go there.”
