As the Lokpal fight continues the BJP has now raised the pitch. There is a clear divide within the Parliamentary Standing committee on the Lokpal Bill over the non inclusion of the Prime Minister in the ambit of the Lokpal. The BJP has demanded the inclusion of the Prime Minister and will submit a dissent note on the issue on Thursday (December 1).
Considering the widely opposing stands of the political parties on the Lokpal bill – it was no surprise that when members met – the differences were sharp.
Perhaps sensing the mood there were quick assurance from the Congress members of the panel; assurances that the differences were likely to be ironed out.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Everyone has an opinion on the issue of pm. All opinions are logical. Report will have the opinion on which committee has agreed to.”
Anna Hazare almost anticipating this hurdle has already drawn the battle lines.
For the BJP the move is well calculated. With this dissent note the BJP gets to ensure that its stand on Lokpal is put on record while keeping the pressure on the UPA to ensure team Anna’s demands are met no matter how inconvenient.
