DMK, AIADMK and CPI members aggressively demand the Rajya Sabha to ask for a government statement over the issue regarding the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting that took place in Geneva in respect of Sri Lanka.

With all government allies also supporting the opposition to take a stand for the issue, the first session of Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Tuesday with the protestors demanding from the Chairman Hamid Ansari to ask the government to give a clear stance on the issue where the important government officers have chosen to remain quite on the matter for now.

The finance minister Pranab Mukherjee spoke to the Rajya Sabha saying, “Our traditional stand has been that we have never supported any country-specific resolution at the UNHCHR”.

Previously, PM Manmohan Singh commented on the issue and said, “We are engaged with all parties in an effort to achieve an outcome that is forward-looking and that ensures that rather than deepening confrontation and mistrust between concerned parties a way forward is found on issues related to accountability and reconciliation”.

However, the opposition was not satisfied with the vague answers of the government and kept demanding a solid stand on the issue. The government assured the agitated opposition that an official statement will be released by the government within a day but the opposition did not believe and kept raising slogans against the government.
