The OPP has laid charges against more than a dozen people involved in guns and drugs import operation spanning from Canada to South America as it concluded its international investigation, dubbed “Project Monto,” in collaboration with various security forces from multiple countries. According to the announcement made by the OPP on Thursday, 13 people were arrested in result of the year-long investigation into the importation of drugs and weapons into Canada.

The OPP revealed to have worked in cooperation with officers in Toronto, York and Peel, as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canada Border Services Agency. Moreover, the investigation received help from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In his remarks, OPP Chief Superintendent Rick Barnum stated that “Project Monto sends a clear and strong message that police will do everything in our power to safeguard our communities.” The investigation started in 2014, when officers caught illegal drugs being imported from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia and Guyana. Police said the drugs were then distrusted in the Toronto area and across Newfoundland and Labrador. They also investigated reports of prohibited weapons coming to Canada from Florida.

According to the OOP’s announcement on Thursday, it was explained that the investigation also led to seizure of a total of 123 kilograms of cocaine worth approximately $12.2 million. Moreover, Project Monto investigators apprehended 22 firearms and $146,000 in cash, along with four vehicles.
