Your wardrobe’s not the only thing in need of an update this fall — admit it, you’re kind of sick of sporting the same beachy, messy strands every day, aren’t you? Not to mention how fried your mane looks after all those months of fun in the sun. Clearly, it’s time for a change

So, we scoured the runways to find the most stunning trends, then looked to the red carpet to find the best ways to wear them. From mod bangs and statement headpieces to mega-volume and something called the lady combover (trust us, it’s a lot prettier than it sounds), here are the 11 best coiffs to rock this fall.

Statement Headpieces

This trend combines two things we cherish: great hair and jaw-droppingly gorgeous jewelry. Best showcased on the runways at Rodarte and Dolce & Gabbana, and on the red carpet by Keira Knightley and Kirsten Dunst, statement baubles for your locks are so on trend for fall. To make sure these sometimes-heavy-pieces stay put in your strands, pair them with big braids and twists which will allow you to stick in more pins to keep them in place. It all looks so opulent — we’re obsessed!

Mod Bangs

We for one, love a good set of bangs — they frame the face and make for an instant focal point of your style. Plus, they’re the ultimate lazy-girl hairstyle because they help you look polished and put-together with minimal effort. This season, brow-grazing blunt bangs like Jessica Biel’s are the fringe to flaunt, so stock up on a good round brush and some styling cream — they’re the only tools you’ll need to work this cool cut.

Romantic Twists

Twisted tresses had a big moment last spring, but it looks like the momentum is carrying them through fall. We spotted pretty twists everywhere from Gucci to Valentino, and then some. We like the Renaissance Faire flair Kerry Washington is going for, here, pairing soft waves with loosely pulled-back twists. Romantic, elegant, and ladylike, all with just a few flicks of the wrist. Accentuate the look with a pretty accessory, or keep it simple with a few plain pins — you really can’t go wrong with this style.

The Lady Combover

Also known as the deep side-part, this asymmetrical coiff is popping up everywhere right now. We like Jessica Chastain’s version which features lush, natural curls and slightly tousled roots. A good mousse is your best friend when it comes to this style — it will enhance the curl, provide hold, and give you that piece-y look on your roots. Run it through your hair while your head is upside-down, then take a comb to create your part. Use your fingers to manipulate hair where you want it to stay, then rake your fingers through your roots and gently shake to give hair that sexily disheveled appearance.

Modern Bouffants

We thought we really loved volume, but then we caught sight of the hair at Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, and Derek Lam, all of which featured puffed-up coiff confections. While those sky-high hairstyles might be a bit much for the average gal, there’s still a way to play up volume without looking cuckoo. As demonstrated by the lovely Carey Mulligan, by slicking back the sides of your hair and backcombing the top, you can emphasize the volume of your ‘do without going crazy with the hairspray and rat tail comb. Just add a little bit of fluff to the top, spray it in place, and tack down those sides with some gel and a few pins. Instant glam, without the batty-aunt vibe.

Tousled Bobs

You don’t have to completely swear off your beachy waves quite yet — tousled bobs, like those seen on Dianna Agron, Chloe Sevigny, and Zoe Kazan, here, are a great way to take that summery texture into fall. The shorter length adds some freshness and movement, plus it guarantees that all those fried ends — courtesy of too much fun in the sun — won’t cause you any more issues.

Au Naturel

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: We are so glad to see more women sporting their natural texture. Viola Davis spoke of how “liberating” wearing her hair natural was, and stars like Oprah, Halle Berry, and Solange Knowles have all been photographed recently with their naturally-textured tresses. By trading in their wigs, weaves, and pressed locks in favor of their curls and kinks, these women are showing that not only is it okay to go natural, it’s also absolutely stunning.

If you’re making the leap from processed to natural hair, please remember to make sure to apply a hair oil to your strands religiously — when applied in conjunction with a leave-in conditioner, it will help keep your porous hair properly moisturized.

Super-Sleek Roots

Shiny, low-volume roots — as seen on the runways at Alexander Wang, Lanvin, and Chloé — are a blessing for fine-haired ladies, who don’t want to worry about trying to fake mega-volume in their tresses in order to be au courant. For girls with thick locks, take a cue from Julianne Moore’s look, here. Blow out your hair straight, then use a flat iron (choose one with a beveled edge so you can get right at the root) to straighten. Sweep hair all to one side, then use pins to press the hair on the opposite side flat against your head.

Polished Ponytails

We know, we know — not exactly a groundbreaking style. But, the appeal of the classic ponytail cannot be denied, as evidenced by its domination on the runways this season. The key here is to keep it sleek and polished, so use gel to slick back your strands and hold them in place. As far as placement goes, we like Sophia Bush’s sexy tail here. Not quite as high as Jason Wu’s dominatrix ponies, but far enough up to still look strong and sexy and not soft or too casual. To make it even more sophisticated, take a small section of hair and wrap it around the elastic to hide, or use fabric-like leather or suede to create a custom hair wrap — just tuck the ends underneath your hair and pin in place.

Swingy Layers

Layers, like Nicole Richie’s here, are a perennial style favorite for a reason: They get rid of hanging weight to lighten up your ‘do without removing a lot of length. They also frame your face and add movement and texture to your style. To get this look, apply a volumizer to hair from root to tip, then use a round brush to blow out your hair, section by section. Once hair is dry, take a tiny bit of texturizer on your fingers, then rub through your ends to dirty them up and add some sexy pieciness.

Angular Crop

A short, chin-grazing hairstyle is super bold, but you can up the drama factor à la Daria Werbowy and chose an angular crop for instant edge. The side-parted style and precise lines of this cut, also spotted recently on Elisabeth Moss and Portia de Rossi, add angles to the face, making it a flattering choice for everyone. Seriously, we knew Daria had some killer cheekbones, but with her hair this short, those razor-sharp lines are on full display, and we are hypnotized. The best part about this cut is its versatility (really!). You can wear it naturally textured to soften it up, or blow it sleek to create avant-garde appeal.
