Acharya Sri Khadi MadamaEpisode – 49

The great bird was very graceful as it stood in Tadasana, paused a moment and then took in a great breath as it outstretched it’s arms, lifting them high overhead where they met, palms pressed together in the Prayer Mudra, then bringing them to the top of its head, where they rested, while Garuda exhaled squatted down onto the pads of his feet with his heels up and paused a moment. Immediately afterwards, he inhaled once again rising back up onto his flat feet, and exhaled circling his arms outward, and exhaling bringing his arms outward, downward and finally to a Prayer Mudra with finger tips pointing toward the ground. From this position Garuda crossed his wrists, right wrist over left and then clasped his hands together; he then inhaled crossing his left leg over and around his right leg so that his left foot was tightly hooked around his right calf. Then he brought his clasped hands upwards, turning them inwards towards his chest to rest at his heart. Here, he stayed to breathe and balance for a few moments. Gracie was amazed by this very difficult pose and wondered how she would ever master it. Garuda then unwrapped himself by dropping his hands downward once again, returning them to a downward pointing Prayer Mudra; unwrapping his left leg and returning back to both feet on the ground, flat. With a deep inhalation, he once again outstretched his bringing them outwards and upward until they met, palms together in the Prayer Mudra above his head, then he exhaled and touched the heels of his palms to the top of his head, then their tips to the center of his forehead, and finally at the center of his chest. “The opening movement of squatting down to the ground and then rising up to spread your wings, represents me hatching from my egg and then spreading my wings to the sky for the first time. When you practice my pose, Gracie, you will be able to summon the air element for any good purpose. And, of course, you will be able to summon me, should you ever need, my help.” the large Pink Garuda explained. “Now you try it and let me see how you manage. Oh, and one more thing, don’t forget that you have to reverse sides, Gracie. Remember that what we do in one direction, we must do in it’s opposite in order to keep the Universe and our bodies and minds balanced. This very special pose also helps to balance the exchange of electrical current in the brain to create calmness and focus. If people would try this at work or school or before sports, they would succeed much more easily. They would be able to “fly” through everything with ease, so to speak.” Garuda smiled.

Gracie performed Garudasana perfectly, even though she had a bit of a problem getting her legs to wrap around each other so tightly. But she could feel the positive effect of Garudasana immediately, because she remembered that each Divine Animal Pose contained within it, the secret energy and power of that Divine Being. She felt very humbled and honored and special to have these Divine Beings as teachers and even as friends. Yes, Gracie felt very special.
