The local elections on Thursday have resulted in a strong showing from the U.K. Independence Party that proved shocking for the Tories, Labour and Liberal Democrats.
Despite the fact that Nigel Farage’s party have failed to capture a single council and does not control any English local authority, but it did perform strongly by successfully making inroads into the Tory vote (in places like Essex) and the Labour vote (in places like Rotherham).
For a longer time-span, there were only two prominent political parties in Britain (Conservatives and Labour). However, the 2010 general election made that three with the emergence of Lib Dems – who joined the Conservatives in a coalition government.
With the Scottish National Party (SNP) as the leading party in Scotland, it became a four-party politics in U.K. And now, with the rise of Ukip, the England and Wales are now facing a four-party period.
After a positive performance in local elections, the Ukip leader is now aiming to increase its seat tally in the European parliament – and winning its first seats at Westminster in 2015, assuming it does not manage this feat before then at the Newark by-election.
Despite the allegations of promoting racism, Mr Farage has stressed to keep on highlighting concerns about immigration, arguing it will be an “even bigger” issue in the contest next May.
However, the Tory leader David Cameron has indicated that his party have the answers to issues of immigration and welfare reform.
The Prime Minister has also agreed to the public frustrations over the political establishment’s failure to address their concerns, as he has said: “People want us to deliver.
“The economy is growing, we are creating jobs, but we have got to work harder and we have got to really deliver on issues that are frustrating people and frustrating me, like welfare reform and immigration and making sure people really benefit from this recovery. We will be working flat out to demonstrate that we do have the answers to help hard working people.”
