An announcement declared that the majority of 2,000 people evacuated from the Quebec town of Lac-Mégantic, in result of massive rail tank-car explosions on Saturday morning, will now be allowed to return home today. The announcement made by the city’s mayor advised all residents to strictly abide by all precautionary measures regarding the drinking water supply and air quality.

The announcement mentioned that almost 1,200 residents live in the Fatima and some parts of the Cousineau sectors of town will be allowed home. Whereas, the remaining 800 people will not be allowed to return home as yet due to incomplete work in the center of town as it is the hardest hit area by the explosions. The Fire Chief of Lac-Mégantic, Denis Lauzon, mentioned that “the fire is under control,” while explaining that “we are monitoring the area to make sure everything is safe …. As of now, we have a small area that we cannot open for safety [reasons].” He elucidated the risk as the machinery being used to clean the area has be capability of sometime lighting spark fires that could reach the sewer system, where oil leaked from the damaged tankers is jammed. As a result, precautions are still being taken.

A representative of the Quebec’s civil security department, Jean-Thomas Fortin, stated that the provincial police have informed all those being allowed to return home regarding the precautionary measures. Officials have reiterated that there is no apparent problem with the town’s water but the boil water advisory was just in place as a precautionary measure since Sunday.
