Levine to face tournament No. 12 seed, Gilles Simon of France

Jesse Levine (Ottawa, ON) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) both posted four set wins on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the tennis season in Melbourne.

Raonic, seeded no. 13 in the men’s draw, overcame a first set hiccup to defeat Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 7-6(0). The win is Raonic’s first official ATP victory of 2013 after losing his opening match at Brisbane and playing an exhibition event in Kooyong. The 22-year-old will meet another Czech, world no. 75 Lukas Rosol in the second round on Thursday. Rosol upset Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon last year. It will be the first encounter between the two players.

Levine, who is playing his first Grand Slam as Canadian, put forth an impressive display to knock out former world no. 5 Tommy Robredo 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4. In Thursday’s second round, Levine will go up against Gilles Simon of France, the tournament’s no. 12 seed. Levine has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open for the second time in his career after reaching the same stage in 2008.

On the women’s side, Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC), playing the first Major of her comeback, was eliminated 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round by China’s Peng Shuai.
