York police arrest six in car accident insurance fraud

Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit have arrested and charged six suspects following an investigation into a staged motor vehicle collision in the City of Vaughan.

On Monday, November 9, 2009, two suspects attended the York Regional Police Collision Reporting Centre and advised police that they had been in a collision at Highway 7 and Woodstream Boulevard. Both suspects claimed they were the sole occupants in their respective vehicles at the time.

Shortly after, both suspects contacted their respective insurance companies and advised them they had passengers in their vehicles. It was also reported that everyone involved had been injured. The insurance companies contacted the Insurance Bureau of Canada and an investigation ensued.

In March, the Insurance Bureau of Canada turned their findings over to the Major Fraud Unit for further investigation. Between Tuesday, June 21, 2011 and Wednesday, June, 22, 2011, the six suspects attended 2 District Headquarters in the Town of Richmond Hill and were arrested without incident.

 Mustafa MOHAMED, 33, of Toronto
 Sinnathamby BALASUBRAMANIAM, 56, of Toronto
 Navanantheni BALASUBRAMANIAM, 48, of Toronto
 Mahad ALI, 32, of Toronto

Charges Include:

 Fraud Over $5,000
 Public Mischief
 Obstruct Peace Officer
 Conspiracy to Commit and Indictable Offence
 Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
The six suspects were released from custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in the Town of Newmarket on Thursday, July 28, 2011.
