On Wednesday, November 16, a group of financial services professionals have teamed up to host a trivia night to fundraise for Camp Oki, Canada’s first and only summer camp for children and teens with congenital heart disease. Established in 2004, Camp Oki started as a long-weekend program for children from the pacemaker and defibrillator clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). Over the years, it has grown into a free week-long program in Muskoka with support from SickKids Foundation. Give Back Group, the philanthropy organization hosting this fun-filled evening, is dedicated to helping fundraise for charitable organizations and selects one recipient every year.
“Give Back Group hopes to raise money to benefit SickKids, so that Camp Oki can continue bringing the great outdoors to campers with special hearts,” says co-founder Lindsay Black.
At the event, Dr. Elizabeth Stephenson, Staff Cardiologist at SickKids, will share some remarks about Camp Oki and the Labatt Family Heart Centre, one of the largest paediatric heart centres in the world. Attendees can mingle over light refreshments and snacks before gearing up to compete in trivia night. They can form their own teams or sign up as an individual to join a team.
“With this trivia night fundraiser, we’re striving to make a difference while having fun,” adds co-founder Jasmit Bhandal.
At Camp Oki, doctors and nurses from the Labatt Family Heart Centre are on site to provide medical attention should it be needed. Campers include kids and teens from across Ontario and Quebec with any type of heart disease. Camp Oki, which is entirely funded by donations, provides a traditional camp experience so that participants realize they don’t have to be sidelined by their health challenges.
Give Back Group’s organizing committee includes Emily Choi, Sandy Lam, Janhavi Nandre, Priti Shokeen, Rob Stewart and Debbie Thomas. It is grateful for the generous support provided by their corporate sponsors the TMX Group, ITG, National Bank Financial Markets, Horizons ETFs Canada and MSCI Women’s Leadership Forum.
