HurricaneIrene-NewYorkHouse Republicans have been divided regarding the role of the federal government in providing aid to the areas destroyed by the tropical storm Irene. Many Republican have made suggestions regarding the aid distribution by Congress. Amongst them is the House majority leader, Eric Cantor who has delivered the House Republican consensus that whatever amount the Congress decides to distribute with reference to the tropical storm, an equal proportion of expenditure should be cut in order to prevent the federal deficit from growing.

On the other hand, the House Republicans belonging to the areas ravaged by the flood have impressed that the budget deficit should not be given preference over helping the people who have suffered in the tropical storm. Staten Island’s republican representative, Micheal G.Grimm said “You can’t put a number on keeping citizens safe. It’s something the federal government must do. For example, if we’re attacked, we wouldn’t hold a budgetary meeting.”

Many republicans have outwardly rejected Eric Cantor and his supporters’ ideas and clearly outlined that both the issues are poles apart. Budget deficit and aid for flood-ridden areas hold no connection to each other.

Apart from the rift amongst the Republicans, the Democrats have taken the opportunity and outlined the distinction between the two parties. Senator of New Jersey, Frank R.Lautenberg announced that the Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security had approved $6 billion for the victimized communities of Tropical Storm Irene.

The question now is that how long Cantor can keep the idea of aid and federal deficit tied up midst such strong opposition, from within and outside the party.
