A 14 year old Canadian boy, Alexander Montgomery, body was found after massive search of the Old Fort Niagara grounds and lake Ontario. The boy went there for camping with a group participating in a war of 1812 re-enactment and supposed to perform mock battles in New York. Instead, the boy’s funeral is to be conducted on Friday as his mother awaits court appearance associated with her son’s death. At the funeral, the boy’s family relatives would be asking for donations to Wounded Warriors or to the Alex Montgomery Bursary Fund for Minor Hockey.
At first, the authorities showed their ignorance over the teen death. Lately, boy’s mother, Paula Montgomery, 48, and her friend, Peter Cooper, 50, faced child endangerment charges and violation of Park’s alcohol rules for serving the minor with alcohol and causing the accidental death of the teen.
The medical examination of boy revealed the presence of alcohol in the body. After interviewing a number of witnesses, Police charged the mother along with her friend for serving the boy with alcohol despite of his being under age for drinking.
In New York State, the legal drinking age is 21, whereas the endangering charge is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of 1 year jail and a fine of $1,000 US. However, the charges applied by state park for providing an underage child with alcohol result in 15 days jail and a fine. It is reported that Montgomery and Cooper were released on bail and expected to appear before the court on Sept. 13.
