A complete public inquiry into the corruption cases of construction businesses has become almost binding. According to Premier Jean Charest, Public Security Minister Robert Dutil and Transportation Minister Pierre Moreau, an inquiry will not take place so easily.
Charest owned the report that was leaked this week, although he has not entirely read it. According to him, it only took place due to the police investigation into fraud that he initiated.
Charest says: “We are taking steps to get results. We have created a competent and independent group and given them the means to gather evidence and charge criminals. This impression that we’re the only ones that have this kind of issue is wrong.”
Opposition head Pauline Marois once again insisted that Premier Jean Charest should take the issue out of the police’s control and allow a public inquiry.
Marois said: “There are too many problems that are presented in this report and they don’t have the choice.”
Member of the city’s Executive Committee, Michael Applebaum said: “Absolutely the mayor of Montreal would support this public inquiry.”
