Negotiations between Air Canada and the union of flight attendants were declared unsuccessful late on Monday, announcing a strike at Canada’s prime airline a near certainty starting Wednesday.
According to Canadian Union for Public Employees (CUPE), which speaks for 6,800 flight attendants at Air Canada, both union and administration have not been able to find a common ground.
On the other hand, the union is still hopeful for a fresh round of talks Tuesday morning.
Flight attendants will be officially striking at one minute past midnight on Wednesday Sept. 21, 2011, until an agreement is signed.
On Monday, the Canadian administration alleged it would legislate flight attendants back to work if final contract meeting failed, showing concerns that a strike at the country’s chief airline would harm a still-fragile economy.
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says, “We have put notice on the order paper today that we have the intention to introduce legislation should there be a work stoppage. They’re close enough to get a deal; they should be able to do it. They told me they can come to a deal.”
