President Barack Obama spoke about the flawed immigration system of the United States of America and stressed that it is not in his sole hands to mend the laws and legislation that governs the immigration system of the country. He has in fact, directly blamed the Republicans for failing to support the Democrats and his proposals for improving the immigration system.

“This notion that somehow I can just change the laws unilaterally is just not true,” Obama said.

This statement was given at a roundtable meeting at the White House with the Hispanic voters. In 2008, the Hispanics showed the greatest support for Obama, with 67 percent of Hispanic voters supporting Obama and 31 percent backed the Republican candidate, Arizona Senator John McCain. However, his failure to work for favorable immigration policies for the Hispanics has decreased the President’s popularity amongst the Hispanics.

Stressing on the importance of immigrants Obama said, “We’re a nation of laws, but we’re also a nation of immigrants.”

President Obama, despite facing failure in immigration policy proposals, has pushed hard for including the Dream Act in the legislation that allows students who came as children to the U.S, a status of a U.S citizen via the legal route. “Our enforcement priority is not to chase down young people who are going to school,” he said.

Showing his disapproval over the behavior of Republicans, he said, “Only a few years ago, you had some Republicans who recognized that we needed to fix our immigration system,” Obama said, noting that his predecessor, George W. Bush, was among them. “Right now you do not have that kind of leadership coming from the Republican Party.”
