The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency criticizes the claims of a Canadian man that he crossed U.S. border by merely showing a scanned photo of his passport on his iPad.
Steve Reisch, a 33-year-old Montreal-based photographer became famous when he allegedly crossed the U.S. border by showing an image of his passport on an iPad. He says, if Steve Jobs was alive, he must have said something about this unique use of Apple technology.
“He’d probably say, ‘Here’s something to work on for the future’. Maybe have some kind of digital certification or encryption to let people travel like this,” Reisch said.
When Reisch was 30 minutes away from the U.S. border on Friday, it suddenly occurred to him that he has forgotten his passport back home. He considered going back home but then thought of crossing border by showing a scanned copy of his passport on Dropbox, an online file storage service.
On the other hand, agency spokeswoman Jenny Burke said Wednesday, there is no way anyone was granted entrance on scanned documents.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency, only an original passport, a NEXUS card, a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, an enhanced driver’s licence, or a Secure Certificate of Indian Status are accepted to cross the U.S. border by land.
Ms. Burke says Mr. Reisch had both a driver’s license and birth certificate.
