Tooba Yahya, 41, testified Tuesday she lied to police when she said she was at the scene where the four Shafia women were brutally killed.
Yahya said she fabricated the entire story and she was not present at the Kingston Mills lock, in Kingston, Ont., where the bodies of her daughters and Shafia’s first wife Rona Amir were found in June 2009.
She said she was worried about her co-accused son Hamed and was trying to save him from police torture. According to Yahya, she assumed her son was going to be left in a cold cell, a common practice in her home country of Afghanistan.
Yahya told the court: “The only way for me to get Hamed out of that torture — whatever I could have done — I would have done that to put myself in that place there.”
Earlier in 2009, Yahya told police she was at the crime scene but blacked out and couldn’t recall anything significant. On the contrary, Yahya now says she has realized her mistake.
“I was thinking I have to say to police I lied and I have done that for Hamed and because of that nothing good will come out of it,” she said.
