Three Canadians were rescued from a bad marine weather almost 450kms from the coast of Hawaii. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, two men aged 29 and 32; along with a young boy aged 9 were travelling in a sailboat. They were heading towards Hawaii when their boat went out of control Tuesday evening.

The coast guard said: “The vessel reportedly suffered damage to its top forestay and its engine overheated. The crew attempted to rig a makeshift sail but completely lost its mast in the extreme conditions.”

The coast guard called upon another ship for help that was sailing roughly 240kms away. At the arrival of the bigger ship, a swell caused the sailboat to turn over, tossing off all three passengers into the waters. Initially, the 29-year-old Canadian was rescued and the other two drifted away, but later they were also found and rescued.

According to Horizon Lines, the company that owns the container ship that was called upon for help, all three passengers are in good health.

“We are thankful the Horizon Reliance was in the right place at the right time to come to the aid of these individuals,” said William A. Hamlin, the company’s vice president of operations.

“We commend Captain Kelleher and his crew for their skilled seamanship in accomplishing a successful rescue despite very adverse weather conditions.”
