Last week, the South Sudanese Council of Ministers adopted the South Sudan map based on 1 January 1956 status including all the disputed areas.
The women, led by the State Minister of Gender, Social Development and Children’s Welfare Rachael Anok Omot presented a petition to the State Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk at his offices.
“We condemn all forms of violence that has been visited upon South Sudanese by the Sudanese President Omar al Bashir’s government. Innocent South Sudanese, including children have been killed and several villages burnt down”, said Omot.
“It is very important that our voices as women should be heard by the United Nations, the UN Secretary General, the President of the Security Council and the international community so that Sudan can respect our territory. We, the women of Jonglei State and women of South Sudan in general do hereby call to an end these hostilities in the northern part of our country. We request the two countries to come to a truce. This is the time for the development and prosperity of our new country,” “, she added.
Governor Juuk said the transfer of the disputed areas of Heglig and Abyei to northern Sudan were part of a conspiracy by the Sudanese government annex oil fields in South Sudan during war.
“Before the independence of the republic of South Sudan, the Government of Sudan started to occupy South Sudanese land and renaming them as part of the north Sudan territory. Our border was there and well known but after the discovery of oil the Sudanese government made a new map and transferred some of the oil fields to northern Sudan”, he said.
