Toronto Mayor Rob Ford made an appearance at a flag-raising event at city hall Thursday. His attendance is noteworthy due to the nature of this event, as it was related to the gay community. Mayor Ford also sent his regrets to organizers of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.
Mayor Ford has never attended an event organized by or for the gay community until today. Initially, Councillor Gord Perks was to speak on the behalf of the Mayor, but instead he came on the stage to invite him.
“A very big thank you to my mayor and your mayor, Mayor Rob Ford,” Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam told the crowd.
Ford said he felt great being at the event that represents the gay community. He was greeted by cheers and applause as he arrived at the annual event. A few jeers from some were quickly quieted by those welcoming Ford’s attendance.
Councillor Janet Davis also appeared at such an event for the first time. Davis paid tribute to her gay son. She attended the event as a member of PFLAG, a support group for parents of lesbians and gays.
Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke was also expected at the ceremony but he couldn’t make it as he was travelling to Oklahoma City to see the Toronto Marlies in the AHL Western Conference Finals.
“His commitment to the LGBT community remains second to none,” an MLSE spokesman said.
