Flight Lieutenant, Adam SandersThe body remains of Welsh RAF Flight Lieutenant, Adam Sanders, who died when two Tornado GR4 jets crashed in the Moray Firth earlier in July, have been recovered off the north east coast of Scotland.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the recovery of the remains of Flt Lt Adam Sanders, 27 – one of two men missing presumed dead after the crash in the Moray Firth on July 3, by the research teams.

Identification procedures are being carried out to sort out the additional remains found at the site. The body of missing Sqn Ldr Samuel Bailey, 36, has still to be formally recovered.

A third pilot, Ft Lt Hywel Poole, 28, an officer from 15 (Reserve) Squadron and based at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, died in hospital after being picked up by a helicopter. He had been training on the Tornado GR4, the aircraft involved in the crash, since November last year. His funeral is at Bangor Cathedral, Wales this afternoon. The only survivor of the crash, who has not been named, is in hospital.

The RAF said in a statement: “The RAF can confirm that the remains of Flt Lt Adam Sanders have been recovered from the area of the Tornado accident in the Moray Firth. Additional remains have also been recovered and are in the process of being formally identified. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the next of kin of the aircrew involved in the accident at this very difficult time. The next of kin of the aircrew involved in this tragic incident and all at RAF Lossiemouth are very grateful for the tremendous show of public support that has been evident since.”

A Military Aviation Authority spokesperson has added: “The recovery of wreckage has now been completed and the Service Inquiry Panel, assisted by the Military Air Accident Investigation Branch, will continue to work quickly and thoroughly to investigate the circumstances of the accident.”
