The Flato Markham Theatre invites you to be inspired by the ancient, cultural traditions of the Far with a spectacular feast of dance, drums and world class talent!  This October Markham’s leading cultural and entertainment destination presents The Royal Drummers & Dancers of Burundi on Sunday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

One of the greatest percussion ensembles in the world, the Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi been a thing of legend; their name equivalent to an idea of true energy and joyful power. Their techniques and traditions are passed down from father to son and performed in the same way for centuries. This 20-member, multi-generational men of the Hutu and Tutsi tribes bring a rhythm, dance and performance that are unparalleled – ancient and compelling, rooted in a tradition of mystical belief, and as electrifyingly modern as any contemporary beat.

Since the 60's the Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi have toured outside of their country, becoming a popular attraction at concert halls and festivals around the world. Their massed drum sound, or the "Burundi beat" as it became known, also caught the ear of Western musicians and they appeared on Joni Mitchell's, The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975). Their distinctive sound also influenced British rock bands of the early 80's, such as Adam and the Ants, and Bow Wow Wow. It was seeing the drummers that inspired Thomas Brooman to organize the first WOMAD festival in 1982, an event that helped to spark the whole World Music boom.

The Flato Markham Theatre is proud to present Canada’s leading Indian dance company, Markham’s own Menaka Thakkar Dance Company on Saturday, October 20, 2012.  Now celebrating its 40th Anniversary in Canada, the Menaka Thakkar Dance Company has been a unique treasure in Canada's dance world.  The internationally renowned dancer, choreographer and founder Menaka Thakkar is the 2012 winner of the Canada Council Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts.

As part of the 12-13 Diamond Series Season, Flato Markham Theatre’s World Stage also presents the Master of the Sarod, Amjad Ali Khan.  Performing alongside his two sons, Amaan Ali Kahn and Ayaan Ali Kahn, Amjad Ali Khan has been credited as single-handedly elevating the Sarod to one of the most popular instruments in the Northern Indian tradition. Amjad Ali Khan appears live on February 10, 2013.
