Premier Christy Clark made an announcement today while in a meeting with the municipal leaders on Friday, declaring that the government has finally had an accord with the B.C. Government and Services Employees Union and intends to replace the George Massey Tunnel. Clark was at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention when she mentioned that the agreement with BCGEU also includes some compensation in wages.

The president of BCGEU, Darryl Walker, stated that it was also agreed in the agreement that the government will not sell any Liquor Distribution Branch warehouses or privatize the service. BCGEU organized a one-day strike at all three of its facilities around the province in July. It even had to reach at a point of banning the backing of contract demands for some time.

The union had asked for a 3.5-per-cent wage hike in the first year along with an additional living cost increment in the second. The provincial government, on the other hand, was ready to oblige by an immediate two per cent and the rest 1.5 per cent over a two-year pact. Further information of the agreement is not yet officially released to the press, but Clark clarified that neither the public-sector employees nor the taxpayers have been exploited.

Clark also took the time to announce that her government has scheduled to boost up the construction on Highway 1. She also highlighted that her office has worked with mayors for replacing the maturing George Massey Tunnel in a phased 10-year-project.
