Mayor of London, Ont., Joe Fontana, has been in the highlights of news since he was charged with fraud. Now almost every major office of the government is asking Fontana to resign from his position. Fontana has declared to make a public announcement regarding the future of his politics today.

Fontana was indicted on Wednesday on charges of committing fraud, breaching trust being a public official and uttering forged documents. According to the RCMP these charges were levied as a result of the investigation triggered from report of The London Free Press saying two cheques of ‘Government of Canada’ were used to pay the bills of London club for covering the cost of wedding reception for Fontana’s son in 2005.

A member of London city council, Paul Hubert, alleged that Fontana shall resign as soon as possible so the investigation can proceed in an unbiased manner. He said that “our challenge is to restore confidence in the office of the mayor and that will only happen if Mr. Fontana steps aside.” Another member of London city council, Joe Swan, asserted that “we have no power, no authority to remove him from office” so now “he has to decide for himself.”

Fontana posted on his website on Tuesday, that he will not let any unconfirmed allegations interfere with his job as mayor. He stated that “make no mistake, I treat the allegations that have been levied as serious, but I have not and will not allow them to be a distraction from my duties and obligations of my office.” It said “I will not stand aside or leave my responsibilities as mayor.”
