The Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, is allegedly going to announce the completion of a loan guarantee for the huge Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project in Labrador on Friday. This project involves construction of a dam and a power-generating station that will produce electricity from Churchill River, and supply power to Nova Scotia as well as Newfoundland and Labrador.

Numerous sources have confirmed that the event in Labrador has been arranged in the last 24 hours on an urgent basis, which also demonstrates how quickly the loan negotiations were carried forward. Unconfirmed reports allege that the negotiations on the loan guarantee of the $7.4 billion megaproject are still ongoing, but the progress has picked up the pace this week and a conclusion looks imminent.

Sources claim that not only is prime minister’s visiting the Goose Bay for making the big announcement, but also that Newfoundland and Labrador Premier, Kathy Dunderdale, and Nova Scotia Premier, Darrel Dexter, have also postponed their scheduled work and made last-minute plans to go. Dunderdale was actually surprised earlier this afternoon when she was told about the prime minister’s visit. She stated “look, all I can tell you is I don’t know that there’s an announcement to be made in Happy-Valley Goose Bay tomorrow. I don’t know that.”

The completion of the federal loan guarantee is sought as a last major achievement on the premier’s Muskrat Falls check list. She has reportedly claimed that once the financing terms are finalized, she would move quickly to officially sanction the project.
