South Africa and New Zealand will play their first match of the two test match series in Cape Town on January 2, 2013 striving to get New Year started in a great manner with a victory. The series is in fact a battle between two un-equal sides as SA is 1st in ICC Test ranking and New Zealand ranked 8th just above Bangladesh.

The South Africans has 2012 as the Golden year in their cricket. However, their progress has strange similarities with their previous golden year 2008, during which they achieved history winning a series in England after 43 years and also defeated Australia in their homeland for the first time ever. Afterwards, they remain unable to keep the winning pace and had a descent. But in 2012, South Africa have not only achieved the top spot in test cricket ranking but are also determined to keep their winning streak to create a history of their consistent domination. Coach Gary Kirsten and skipper Graeme Smith together made the team unvulnerable. All the batsmen including Smith, Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis have the ability to play against any side with a consistent performance. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel are the key bowlers for the side. The probable South African squad will include: Graeme Smith (captain), Alviro Peterson, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers (wicketkeeper), Dean Elgar, Faf du Plessis, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn.

On the other hand, Kiwis had the last year full of mess and blunders. New Zealand have never won a test series against South Africa since they have started playing tests in 1929. Last time they defeated SA in a test match was in 2004 at Auckland. An even more despairing fact is that New Zealand have not won a Test in South Africa since their victory in 1994 at Centurion. New Zealand is a relatively weaker side in the absence of Ross Taylor and other key members. Cricket experts view Martin Guptill as a batsman that only performs against weaker teams and now he needs to prove critics wrong by having some brilliant performance against the South Africa in their homeland. The likely New Zealand lineup will include: Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (captain), Kane Williamson, Dean Brownlie, Daniel Flynn, BJ Watling (wicketkeeper), James Franklin, Doug Bracewell, Jeetan Patel, Trent Boult, Chris Martin.
