On day 2, Captain Darren Sammy made 73 with a partnership of 106 with Denesh Ramdin as the West Indians managed to escape out of trouble. The hosts that were previously at the brink of danger with 151-6 were lifted with the support of seventh wicket pair of Sammy and Ramdin. They ultimately gained lead of 96 as the West Indies were bowled out for 307 in reply to Zimbabwe’s first innings total of 211.
Marlon Samuels scored 51 while fast bowler Kyle Jarvis took grabbed his career-best 5-54 to lead the tourists. In the final session, the local bowlers further created troubles for the tourists to make them slip at 41-3 at stumps, still ort of 55 runs from the hosts’ 1st innings total. Off-spinner Shane Shillingford grabbed 2-9 while fast bowler Shannon Gabriel made an initial strike to take 1-7.
Earlier, the West Indies resumed on 18-2 and the 24-year-old Jarvis has further dented the Caribbean side within a small span. Darren Bravo (11) did not settle and edged to wicket-keeper Regis Chakabva at 43-3. Chris Gayle with his fellow Jamaican Samuels added 38. The 22-year-old debutant Tendai Chatara, claimed his 1st wicket of Gayle (40) with a catch at second slip by skipper Brendan Taylor. Samuels and veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul added fifth wicket partnership of 63 to 81-4. Samuels played dominantly and passed fifty for the 10th time with the help of nine fours and one six, in his last 15 Test innings before medium pacer Hamilton Masakadza made him to edge to a delighted Chakabva. Jarvis then claimed the wicket of expert left-hander Chanderpaul, who under-edged a pull and Chakabva pouched his third catch at 151-6.
Afterwards, Sammy and Ramdin took full control of the game by shifting the momentum and played superbly with utmost confidence. Masakadza then returned to make the breakthrough after the hosts took a worthy lead when Sammy on 72 finally dragged back onto off stump before completing his second test ton. Ray Price claimed Shane Shillingford’s wicket. Ramdin provided Chatara with a second wicket by edging to second slip. Soon afterward, Jarvis trapped Tino Best (24) as his fifth victim.
Zimbabwe’s second innings started smoothly before they lost their way in the last half hour. Tino Mawoyo and Vusi Sibanda made first wicket partnership of 26 runs before Gabriel trapped Tino in chasing a wide outswinger and Sammy gripped it at second slip. Soon afterwards, Shillingford claimed Masakadza’s wicket with a turning catch to Sammy at leg slip. Shillingford then prised out Sibanda before stumps. Nightwatchman Ray Price (7 not out) and captain Brendan Taylor (0 not out) survived till the close.
