The Preliminary Committee set up in late 2012 to organize for the formation of the new body in Upper Nile state said they are facing difficulties in bringing together teachers to enlighten them and elect the executive body to the office.
The Secretary General for the Preliminary Committee, Ustaz Paulino Aban Deng said the mandate of the committee is limited to only three months.
“Our time limit ends at March but now nothing is done so far,” Aban said.
Aban said a delegation visited Juba in November and appointed the committee in a very short time without enough time or resources to boost the committee.
He said they have financial setback to conduct the elections and bring all the state teachers from all schools.
Aban said the formation of the Union is a national policy.
“We have not just invented here in Upper Nile. It will unite the teachers socially as well as in their working place,” he added.
“This is body will help in implementing educational policies brought forward by government. The body will protects the rights of teachers wherever they are,” Aban added.
A member of the Committee James Dak Awang said, “So far about two meetings announced to teachers to come and form the body and conduct elections have failed due to poor attendance.”
“May be some teachers could not come because they might have confusions of not knowing whether the union is for secondary or primary school teachers. But I want to make it clear that the union we are going to form is for both levels in one body,” Dak said.
Dak urged all the teachers to attend the next meeting to make work easy for them.
“We in this preliminary committee will not be there forever. If teachers come they will have to elect the people they want. Teachers should not get sad because of us leading them. We are there to prepare for the way to the union and the way to free, fair and transparent elections,” he said.
