A car bomb blast killed ten and injured several near presidential palace in Somalia on Monday. Apparently, the blast was targeted at senior government officials in the capital, Mogadishu. Nevertheless, majority of the victims were civilians travelling on a public transport.

“We’ve counted at least eight dead so far. It was a car bomb attack near the National Theatre,” said police official Mohamed Duale.

The police allege that the suicide attacker detonated the explosives while driving along a boulevard that runs between the palace and the national theatre. According to senior police officer Abdiqadir Mohamud, the route was near the tearooms that were affected by the blast.

“The suicide car bomber targeted a senior national security officer whose car was passing near the theatre. This public vehicle coincidentally came between the government car and the car bomb when it was hit. Littered in the scene are human hands and flesh,” Mr Mohamud said.

The security measures in Mogadishu have dramatically improved ever since military forces pushed Islamist rebels allied to al-Qaeda out of the city around two years ago. However, the city is often hit by a bomb, reminding them of the existence of militants.

“Many have been killed, some of them were in a minibus that was hit by the blast,” said Hassan Salad, who witnessed the attack. “This is a disaster, there is smoke and dead bodies thrown all around.”
