The news of Ralph Klein’s grievingly ill health provoked an outburst of affection for the former premier. All inclusive friends, colleagues and political allies and opponents, along with many other, expressed their highest regards and sent best wishes and thoughts for Klein, who served as Alberta’s duly elected premier from 1992 to 2006, and also the mayor of Calgary from 1980 to 1989.
Premier Alison Redford informed reporters, while she was in Edmonton, that she has been thinking of Klein and his wife Colleen. She stated on Wednesday, that “it’s a terrible time for any family,” and “he is a great man and he redefined this province and his legacy is important and I know he will be missed. This is the time to talk about that legacy but right now not too much, right now we have to I think respect the fact that the family is going through very difficult times and that our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Alberta Liberal leader, Raj Sherman, released a press statement on Tuesday night, asserting that Klein was “a force to be reckoned with” during his time in the legislature. Sherman added that “he was animated and fiery, and his passion for politics and Alberta serves as an inspiration to me and my colleagues.” Klein has been fighting with frontal lobe dementia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, he was hospitalized in September of 2011 and later shifted to a continuing care facility in October of that year. Klein currently rests in palliative care in that facility.
