An unfortunate accident has left two dead on a busy Melbourne street on Thursday afternoon. Two pedestrians, believed to be in their late teens, were crushed to death when a 15-metre long section of brick wall collapsed on Swanston Street in Carlton.

Reportedly, another teenage girl has suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident and was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The locals tried helping the victims out of the debris but it was too late.

“I just frantically ran across and started digging because I could see their head and half their torso out, so I was frantically taking the bricks off her. The whole wall just gave way,” said Martin Setka.

Jonathan Lian, another witness, was sitting in a nearby café when the tragic incident took place. Liam said the scene was horrifying and it resembled a war zone.

“I heard a loud noise; it was like a thunder clap. I thought a bomb went off. It was really bad. It was like a war zone. There was dust everywhere, and they were trying to dig people out. It was like chaos. The police came shortly after, it was just terrible, it was just ghastly,” he said.

The police have not yet revealed the identities of the two deceased victims. According to Inspector Ian Lindsay, the wall had collapsed due to very strong wind gusts.

“It appears they’ve just been pedestrians in the wrong place at the wrong time when the wall has collapsed,” he said.
