A recently conducted new poll show that the two weeks of Conservative attack ads have had very little success in shadowing Justin Trudeau’s charm with Canadians. The latest Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey results show that the Liberal party has reached up to seven-point in lead over the Conservatives in the last two weeks alone, following Trudeau’s clean sweep leadership victory last month.

The survey showed that the support of Liberals is sustained at 35 per cent, while the support of Conservatives has decreased down to 28 and the NDP to 22. Lastly, the support of the Green party was at seven per cent. Statistics remind that this is the highest level of support secured by the Liberals since March 2009, i.e. when party selected Michael Ignatieff as their leader who briefly maintained the party’s fortunes. Consequently, Ignatieff led the party to its worst defeat in history in the 2011 election, leading the party to be ranked in third place. The Liberal support is still not quite as high as the 36-per-cent acquired by the NDP a year ago immediately following the election of its new leader, Tom Mulcair.

The Conservatives began broadcasting the ads within hours of Trudeau’s leadership victory on April 14. The senior vice-president of Doug Anderson, Harris-Decima, stated that the “things can certainly change in Canadian political opinion and, with two relatively untested leaders, I’d expect these numbers are still relatively soft.” He added “what we do know for certain is that more people are saying they’d vote Liberal than have felt inclined to say that in years. And it’s better to be up than down.”
