David Henry Hwang Theater (Los Angeles, CA)

Chess follows a love triangle between a boorish American chess star, a displaced Russian champion and the American’s female assistant. Set during the Cold War, the musical employs some seriously upbeat rock music to lend a bit of levity to a serious game. With music by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and lyrics by Tim Rice, Chess is loosely based on the lives of chess grandmasters Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov who each want to win international tournaments for purposes of nationalistic propaganda. It’s an intriguing tale of romantic rivalries, cunning gamesmanship and political tensions, and includes the hit songs “One Night in Bangkok” and “I Know Him So Well.”
