Toronto Police has finally traced, arrested and laid charges on a suspected connected to a sexual assault case of a 9-year-old girl almost more than 20 years ago. It was disclosed that a 45-year-old Shane Garry, from Brampton, was arrested on Thursday and charged with three offences, including kidnapping, forcible confinement, and sexual assault. Police explained that Garry was identified today from the DNA evidence collected from the incident in 1991.
Det. Ali Ansari elucidated that even though the DNA evidence was collected and available at the time, police did not have the technology equipped to identify the suspect. He stated that "the case was unsolved and it went cold…with the advent of new technology we were able to solve this cold case many many years later." According to the crime report, it was explained that two young sisters were playing in an apartment building lobby near Warden and Danforth avenues in February 1991, when a stranger invited them to eat something and they got into his car. Shortly afterward, the younger 5-year-old girl was dropped off at a store on Victoria Park Avenue Police, while the 9-year-old was driven to a secluded area and sexually assaulted.
Ansari admitted that the incident was reported to police in 1991, but he alleged that "despite the efforts of the investigators to identify the suspect in this matter, the case was unsolved and it went cold." Police have released several photos of Garry as they believe there may be more victims.
