The event held at Regency Hotel in Juba was attended by members of the diplomatic missions, ministers and other officials in South Sudan.
According to Ambassador Nakaha Stanislas, Head of AU liaison office in South Sudan, the AU has an objective of uniting African countries and ensuring cooperation among them.
“Since its inception, it (AU) has provided and contributed to the independence of many African countries,” he said of the achievements of the AU.
Nakaha however said that the legacy of the colonial masters has led to other vices like conflicts and that life has not been easy for many African countries.
The AU ambassador called for conflict resolution, peace consolidation, respect of human rights, rule of law and good governance.
Despite the challenges, Nakaha said Africa is still trying to achieve a united Africa and that there are reasons to be proud of the 50 years of AU’s existence.
The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Culture, Dr. Jok Madut Jok, said that the colonial boundaries mean nothing if all Africans can look at themselves as one people.
He says the lack of knowledge about the African people is a serious challenge that makes unity hard among the (Africans0. Dr. Jok also noted that Africans remain short of capacity to manage its affairs.
The Ethiopian Ambassador to South Sudan, Fre Tesfamichael Tesfatsion on his part said that the there is need to interconnect African states if we are to achieve a united Africa.
South Sudan is the last country to join the AU on the 10th July 2011 just a day after its independence.
