I was trying to write about me in the third person, and it felt weird. So I stopped. You know its me, so whats the point? I was born in Savannah, GA but grew up on the coast of neighboring South Carolina. A love of music was instilled in me early on, mostly through my fathers widely varied record collection Waylon Jennings to Man of La Mancha; Dave Brubeck to The Stones. And Bill Broonzy. Actually Waylon came later, on cassette, but he loved him, and now so do I. Singing and playing were also encouraged, and by 16 I had found my way into my first band. Then came a stint as a roadie for soul legend Clarence Carter, some college, a walkabout through the deserts of the middle east and an aborted pursuit of improv comedy in Chicago. Returning to Charleston in the late 90s, I entered a period in which I married a classic verse/chorus/bridge style of songwriting with lo-fi sensibilities. Its no surprise key influences at this point were both The Band and GBV. It was a quasi-scene for a minute, and I formed a couple different bands to absorb the songs I was generating. Those include The Aamerican Tenants and The Ex-Lovers, the latter which relocated to Nashville and released the acclaimed This Might Kill Us in 2004. In 2008 I moved again, this time to New York City, and have since focused on mainly being a solo artist. My songs draw from twenty years of wanderlust, relationships and observation. Last year saw the release of new material recorded at NY HED with help from Matt Verta-Ray (Heavy Trash), JD Hughes (The Queers) and Sergio Sayeg (Garotas Suecas). Now Im back at work with Matt on a new set of songs which I hope will be out by the fall.
